This term, Year 8 students in Materials and Technology worked in groups to create dog blankets, which will be donated to the RSPCA. To complete this project, students learnt the new skill of tie dying to give the blankets colour and style. They also had to learn how to thread and operate a sewing machine, which was a new challenge and experience for them all.
Students cut out squares of plain fabric to lay between the patterned fabric, pinned the fabric squares together and then sewed the rows together using straight stitching. They then assembled the blanket with a polyfill for warmth and comfort.
The students were very happy with the end result of the colourful blankets. Some students took their new skill a little further and repaired holes in school shirts and pockets. A job well done!!
