One of our Year 11 students, Hayley Jamieson, was one of 24 Western Australian students selected to attend the Girls’ Focus on Mining Day Trip to visit the South32 Worsley Alumina mine and refinery over the summer holidays.
Throughout their time, they met numerous female mining professionals, who shared their stories of what lead them into a career in mining as well as the opportunities available for the next generation of female mining professionals.
One of our Year 12 students in 2021, Darcy Dhu, attended the National Indigenous Business Summer School WA at Curtin University in January. He joined a group of 25 selected Year 11 and 12 students from around Western Australia.
The purpose of the program is to provide a fully immersive experience for students thinking of entering the world of business or becoming an entrepreneur. Students were given the opportunity to experience what daily life is like as a university student.
Students had the opportunity to see business in action and learn about the available pathways into business studies.
Jagriti Mehta and Hai Anh Ha
January saw Jagriti Mehta and Hai Anh Ha, both Year 11 students, head to Kalgoorlie as selected participants in Curtin University’s Girls’ Focus on Mining Camp.
The camp aims to inspire young women to pursue careers in the mining industry, showcasing job and study opportunities.
Over a five day period, the girls visited venues including Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines’ Super Pit, BHP Nickel West’s smelter, Kanowna Belle gold mine and the Museum of the Goldfields.
They also gained a taste of university life, engaging in a range of activities on campus and in the community, while staying at the Western Australian School of Mines Kalgoorlie accommodation, Agricola.
