In society today, dance is more popular than ever. The Dance Elite Program at Warwick Senior High School provides a unique way for students to experience an intrinsic sense of enjoyment and personal achievement through expressing and challenging themselves physically. As an art form, dance encourages artistic creativity. The Dance teachers at Warwick Senior High School, foster the student’s passion, imagination and expression through a range of physically active and engaging lessons.

The Dance Program is designed to build on the fundamental skills of movement. Students gain an understanding of the physical competencies specific to dance including strength, flexibility, co-ordination and musicality, while using their body as a medium for artistic expression. They gain experience in different styles and forms of dance and are given opportunities to perform to a variety of audiences.

Students are taught set routines but are also encouraged to create and present other dances relevant to their lives. Appropriate popular music is used to maintain motivation. They are taught to use a wide range of creative processes such as improvisation and ways to manipulate the choreographic elements when creating their own dance works both in large and small groups.

In the Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 programs, students are exposed to a variety of genres such as Jazz, Tap, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Cheerleading, Folk, Creative, and Gymnastics.

Dance is organised into two broad areas:

  • Technique and Performance Skill
  • Choreography and Reflection

In Years 11 and 12, Dance is based on the VET pathway, Certificate II in Dance course. This extends over two years and has both a theory and practical component.

Dancefest

The highlight of the school’s Dance program is the annual Dancefest where approximately 30 dance routines are performed by over 100 students across the evening. This event is held for the enjoyment of the students and families alike, and to practice their routines in front of an audience as a part of their assessment in Dance.
